International Scout For Sale

International Scout For Sale

The International Harvester Scout, commonly referred to simply as the International Scout, is the first American-produced civilian off-road sports utility vehicle (SUV). International Harvester (IH) originally marketed the utility vehicle as competition to the Jeep, but that approach changed dramatically during a production period that lasted between the 1961 and 1980 model years. While all but the most hardcore enthusiasts have all but forgotten this vehicle, the International Scout for sale during that near-twenty-year period was a moderately popular SUV and pickup truck option for its time.

The Scout 80 was the International Scout for sale between 1960 and 1965. The distinctive elements of this style were the removable sliding side windows, which were gone by 1962, the fold-down windshield, and the vacuum windshield wipers that were mounted to the top of the windshield. There is also a distinctive IH logo mounted at the center of the front grille.

International Harvester celebrated manufacturing their 100,000 Scout 80 by producing their first specialty package, the Red Series. The name might suggest a red exterior, but it was actually all white with a red interior that included a full-length headliner and full floor mats. There was also a special medallion affixed to the driver and passenger doors that read, "100,000 Red Carpet Series Scout by International".

In late 1965 for the 1966 model year, IH replaced the Scout 80 with the redesigned Scout 800. This all-new International Scout for sale leveraged recent design advancements to give drivers and passengers more comfort. These aspects included better instrumentation, heating systems, bucket seats, optional rear seats, and larger, more powerful engines. Between 1965 and 1968, IH offered a 266 cubic-inch V8 in addition to the 4-cylinder. From 1965-1967, IH offered a turbocharged version of the 4-cylinder motor.

In 1969 and then in late 1971, IH offered subtle redesigns named the 800A and 800B respectively. The 800A included more creature comforts as well as an upgraded drivetrain. IH also began to offer special trim packages with 800A, such as the Aristocrat, the Sno-Star, and the SR-2. When the 800B came in 1971 it brought with it the Comanche package. The 800B also included some cosmetic upgrades for the standard International Scout for sale.

The year 1971 also saw the introduction of the all-new Scout II, which IH would manufacture until 1980 with only minor revisions along the way. This was very similar to the Jeep CK-7, which AMC manufactured as essentially the same vehicle throughout the 70s and much of the 80s. Also like Jeep, the jump from the Scout I to the Scout II brought very little change to the exterior body style. However, one can easily identify the vehicles of each Scout generation due to the distinctive styling of the front grilles.

In the final years of the Scout II, between 1976 and 1980, IH manufactured several distinct Scout models in addition to the various specialty packages that were available. Both the Scout II Terra and the Scout II Traveler were Scout IIs with removable fiberglass tops. The Terra had a half-top while the Traveler boasted a full top with a hatchback-style liftgate. IH manufactured the Soft-top Safari II (SSII) from 1977 to 1979 in another attempt to compete directly with Jeep, this time the Jeep CJ. The SSII did not win much public appeal but it had quite a bit of success in the off-road racing circuits of the late 1970s.

The SSII had been IH's last-ditch effort to lay a real claim in the automotive industry. With that failure, IH sold its agricultural division, the bulk of the company, and faded away, and the International Scout faded with it.

In-Depth Automotive Review - 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid - Are The Results Worth The Money?

In-Depth Automotive Review - 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid - Are The Results Worth The Money?

Over the last six months, I've gotten a lot of questions about how I can better my fuel economy in a large SUV. While consumers are expecting impossible solutions to achieve the 25-30 mpg by any means necessary, I found it hard to tell them to do this, or to install that, or just don't do these things. And full knowing I know that the overall improvement on the bottom line was only 10% better, very little change to make it worthwhile and could be costly. The Chevrolet Tahoe has been one of the quintessential niche vehicles in GM's line up, and it's easily important to further research new, innovative ways to further keep themselves in contention when it came to expensive gasoline or thrilling competition. When I heard through the grapevine that a 2-mode hybrid system was going to be making its way into these benchmark SUV's, I just had to research more and find out if what it had to offer was worth the king's ransom. I drive the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and get the full array of details the consumers must know.

At first, I could not help but notice the amount of hybrid decals the Tahoe was sporting. Apparently, GM is trying to get the word out in a big way, if it were up to me, I would send mine to the detail shop to get them removed. There are noticeable details that set this model out from the rest. The front bumper and bumper have been modified for better aerodynamics. This one has 20" wheels that are an exclusive feature and puts this Tahoe apart from the rest. Additionally, this one has LED taillights, resculptured panels and more plastic pieces to fit into the lightweight design. It was a Tahoe, but very much distinguishable against an army or 50 other Tahoe models.

The difference maker is what is inside, the technological marvel pleases with a hybrid system that works together in harmony. Hybrid Tahoe's are naturally equipped with a 6.0L V8 with a continuously variable transmission, 2 81hp electric motors, and a 300-volt nickel hydride battery system. Let's see how it all works together.

The 2wd LT2 model I drove was quiet starting. It used a combination of motors and engine power on the start up and quieted down with only motor power on idle. As I shifted into drive, the first 7-15 mph was quiet, sounded like a golf cart. And as I accelerated further, the engine kicked in and it is easily known by the navigation interface and exhaust sound. This interface is neat, it made knowing what mode I was in a snap by using easy, colorful pictures to show me all the specifics. Also, this was great as it taught me to be more frugal on foot power and try to drive in a more economical fashion. The total engine power didn't disappoint either, it was fluid and seamless. The continuous transmission was slick, I didn't feel the gear shifts or throttle kickdown as the electric motors filled in those gaps. It is with this power that the Tahoe Hybrid can still tow an unbelievable 7000 lbs, fascinating! With the interface, there is also an economy gauge and an instant fuel economy meter in the driver information center that gave me all the pertinent info. In my 50+ mile trip, I averaged about 17.8 mpg, this considering I was flogging the accelerator quite often.

So with all the use of power, exactly how does the Tahoe Hybrid regenerate itself? First of all, this is not a "plug in hybrid", its regeneration comes from the braking system. As we slow down, the motors recharge the batteries using the regenerative braking system, a very smart and innovative feature. This made maintenance a non-issue and was very easy to understand from the get go. The batteries are hidden under the second row seating, I had to literally ask the sales consultant where it was, hidden very well. I also found out that there are some features (power lift gate, power release second row seats) you can't get on this hybrid that other Tahoes have, more or less for weight savings.

All in all, the Tahoe Hybrid didn't boast huge fuel economy gains, I wasn't too deeply impressed, but I had to look at the overall picture. This is of course the large SUV arena, so any new trends at this point is certainly welcome. Basic 2WD LT2models start in the neighborhood of k and go up from there depending on how fancy consumers get. The base model comes stacked however with nav, leather appointed seating, bose, very nice indeed. This hybrid system is expensive, it does all the right things very nicely, consumers just have to decide whether it is the money they want to invest in such a bulbous automobile. A great move and step in the right direction for GM, will this new technology make its way into other GM vehicles? It would be a smart idea...

Not a Chrysler PT Cruiser Ripoff - The Chevrolet HHR is a Hot Retro Car

Not a Chrysler PT Cruiser Ripoff - The Chevrolet HHR is a Hot Retro Car

The Chevrolet HHR, a fresh take on the retro car trend started by the Chrysler PT Cruiser offers you a distinctive look, smooth ride and versatile interior. It's designed to compete with Chrysler's PT Cruiser. The Chevrolet HHR is built on the Chevy Cobalt small sedan's platform. It's a four-door vehicle with a rear touch-pad liftgate. The 2006 Chevrolet HHR is a new kind of car. But honestly, it's is not for the sporting driver unless your driving the HHR SS Turbocharged version or tricked one out.

Driving

The Chevy HHR's strength is a smooth and quiet ride. Stock, it's not the best choice if you drive on curved rural two-lane roads or unimproved roads. If you spend the bucks you saved buying the HHR to trick it out, you get a sexy hot car, given it's retro appeal. Sharing the Chevrolet Cobalt's powertrain, you have a small wagon with utility and basic comfort.

Looks

The HHR, a retro Car, looks like the PT, but was inspired by the 1949 Chevrolet Suburban. When the Chevrolet released the HHR, it recaptured the classic looks of Chevy's mid-century trucks and vans. The HHR panel van is not for everyone, but will appeal to you if you want a small delivery vehicle or a car with a late forties look to it.

Performance

You find that nothing equals the HHR SS Turbocharged hot car's performance. Chevy delivers design, performance and value with standard features found on more expensive vehicles. The non-turbocharged HHR falls behind the competition is in overall performance and refinement. GM aimed the HHR at a younger crowd with a broad range of appearance and performance accessories.

Price

The Chevrolet HHR is a four-door sport utility vehicle with a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission in the LS, 1LT, and 2LT models priced from ,550 to ,350. It's packed with features, retro styling and practicality all at affordable price for a retro car. You may not know what a '49 Suburban looks like, but you will like the HHR's classic-car styling, practicality, mainstream mechanicals and affordable pricing.

As cool as the 1940s-style exterior is, the Chevrolet HHR is equally cool for its use of space and features like remote start and the iPod connector. The Chevrolet HHR looks like the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the lead designer of the PT Cruiser was involved in the design of the Chevy HHR. The Chevrolet HHR offers you roughly the same EPA fuel-economy ratings regardless of engine or transmission choice. Whether it's the HHR SS Turbocharged or a tricked out model, it's a sexy hot car.

2006 Toyota Matrix: Value Meets Fun

2006 Toyota Matrix: Value Meets Fun

During the early part of this decade Toyota was examining its vehicle line up and the decision was made to build a car to entice young people who were looking for something that was small, fun to drive, and affordable. While the Corolla served faithfully in this capacity, Toyota needed something that spoke excitement. The Corolla just wasn't that kind of a car and something radically different was needed. Enter the Matrix. Based on the Corolla platform, the Matrix does what no Corolla can do: turn heads. Let's take a look at this sporty compact and see how the 2006 model stacks up.

In 2003, the Matrix was introduced to the North American market. Built in California as a joint venture with General Motors - the Pontiac Vibe is its twin - the Matrix is aimed toward budget conscious young people who want a car that makes a statement. To save money, the Corolla frame was used, but the Matrix stands some 3 inches taller and is 8 inches shorter than its Toyota sibling. The roof line on the Matrix is completely different too as it slopes from front to back and ends in a wedge, giving the car somewhat of a wagon look to it. This rakish appearance is what gives the Matrix its unique look as well as an extra bit of room for people and their stuff. Indeed, both driver and front passenger sit higher up, much like in a small SUV or as in a car like Chrysler's PT Cruiser. With four doors and a rear lift gate, the Matrix acts more like a wagon, but its sleek exterior easily refutes that fact.

Motorists have a choice between front wheel drive and a four wheel drive versions of the car, something not offered on the Corolla. The standard motor for the Matrix is a 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve VVT-I 4-cylinder engine. Mated to a five speed manual transmission, the engine turns out a respectable 126hp. For more power, there is also a higher tuned version of the same engine delivering 164hp. It gets paired with a six speed manual transmission. Four wheel drive versions of the Matrix come equipped with a 4-wheel anti-lock brake system [ABS] which is optional on 2WD models.

Gas mileage for the Matrix makes the car a motorist's dream. At 30 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, the front wheel drive version of the car produces some of the best results of any non-hybrid car sold in North America. A 13 gallon fuel tank makes 400 mile trips a possibility on just one tank of gas; this is particularly good for the student who has to drive back and forth between college campus and home.

Unlike many cars of its size, the aftermarket crowd has produced a wide variety of products to help Matrix owners customize their vehicles. Hood protectors, tail light covers, polymer air dams, fog lights, hood scoops and vents, mud flaps, and paintable window covers are some of the Toyota parts and accessories pitched to youth, who are the primary owners of the Matrix.

MSRP starts at US,110 [CDN,200] with a top of the line Matrix topping out at just under USK to about CDNK.

For the entire North American market, Toyota sells nearly 100,000 Matrix' per year. Not bad for a car whose origins are fairly simple but whose heart is truly sporty and youth minded.
